Extreme sports become popularized in the early 90s with the annual tournament X-Games, which took viewers into a world of the most dangerous competitive sports. Since then, it has become fixture in the competitive sports world, inspiring young athletes to break traditional sport mould of a football, basketball or baseball player and try something new. Here is a list of the top extreme sports.
Moto This is a broad category of sports, characterized by the use of a motorbike. Within this category there is a speed and style category, which challenges athletes to complete a circuit in the fastest time possible, while doing tricks off of ridges and gradients. The best trick sub-category within moto, tests athletes ability to show of their most daring trick off of a slope.
BMX BMX is one of the most recognizable extreme sports because of its demanding circuits that challenge the athlete both mentally and physically. Athletes are required to pedal as hard as they can while navigating a track that is shared with an assortment of other riders. The dangers are numerous as circuits are crowded and riders regularly crash into one another and others are squeezed off the track during turns. Overall it is an adrenalin-fueled sport that draws thousands of fans every year.
Skateboarding Skateboarding is an interesting addition to the extreme as it first developed as a pastime of young children and then evolved into a more complex sport. Now, skateboarding consists of numerous acrobatic tricks that can be performed by the rider. The most recognizable trick was developed in the 1970s and later became known as the Ollie. The sport has gained such notoriety that athletes involved in the sports, such as Tony Hawk have developed international popularity and led to the production of video games and other skateboarding marketing commodities.
