Extreme Sports; Understanding them

Article by Harvey J. Sharp

Extreme sports become popularized in the early 90s with the annual tournament “X-Games”, which took viewers into a world of the most dangerous competitive sports. Since then, it has become fixture in the competitive sports world, inspiring young athletes to break traditional sport mould of a football, basketball or baseball player and try something new. Here is a list of the top extreme sports.

Moto – This is a broad category of sports, characterized by the use of a motorbike. Within this category there is a “speed and style category”, which challenges athletes to complete a circuit in the fastest time possible, while doing tricks off of ridges and gradients. The “best trick” sub-category within moto, tests athletes’ ability to show of their most daring trick off of a slope.

BMX – BMX is one of the most recognizable extreme sports because of its demanding circuits that challenge the athlete both mentally and physically. Athletes are required to pedal as hard as they can while navigating a track that is shared with an assortment of other riders. The dangers are numerous as circuits are crowded and riders regularly crash into one another and others are squeezed off the track during turns. Overall it is an adrenalin-fueled sport that draws thousands of fans every year.

Skateboarding – Skateboarding is an interesting addition to the extreme as it first developed as a pastime of young children and then evolved into a more complex sport. Now, skateboarding consists of numerous acrobatic tricks that can be performed by the rider. The most recognizable trick was developed in the 1970s and later became known as the “Ollie”. The sport has gained such notoriety that athletes involved in the sports, such as Tony Hawk have developed international popularity and led to the production of video games and other skateboarding marketing commodities.

Extreme Sports: Are They Worth The Risk?

Article by Gray Rollins

Extreme sports like street luging, skateboarding on rails and ramps, and snow boarding off nearly impossible jumps are hotter today than they have ever been before. The athletes who pursue these challenging activities often become as dedicated as Olympians and spend hours every day practicing and improving their technique in order to be able to enjoy the thrill that only making the perfect ollie or dropping a hill on a buttboard can bring. Extreme athletes often refer to the adrenaline rush of competing as being “amped,” and many say that there is no other feeling in the world that is as satisfying. For most of these rough and tumble athletes, part of the appeal of extreme sports is the danger.

Unlike sports that are regulated by official certified judges and require the athletes to wear protective gear and perform with ship shape equipment, extreme sports competitions sometimes include relatively unprotected athletes competing on somewhat ramshackle paraphernalia, like luge boards made out of skateboards with plywood additions. These conditions lead to greater thrills for many of the participants, because the more dangerous a situation is the more adrenaline the body produces, leading to the feeling of being “amped.” However, the long term damage that results from the kinds of injuries that many extreme athletes endure often leaves these enthusiastic men and women feeling less than thrilled. Whether or not the excitement of extreme sports is worth the danger is something that nobody can decide but the athlete who is putting his or her body on the line. However, if you or somebody in your life is thinking about joining the hardcore world of extreme sports, it is a good idea to do some research into what common injuries are, and how they can be prevented.

Often, wearing a helmet or certain kinds of padding can make the difference between ending up in the hospital after a wipe-out and walking away with a few pesky bruises. The hazards of every sport are unique, so the kinds of kneepads that a skateboarder favors might not be very much help to a street luger. The only protective gear that will really help an athlete is the gear that is specifically appropriate to his or her sport, so before you put any money into protective gear, read as much as you can about the hazards you are likely to face, and try to get some firsthand advice from experienced athletes in the field you want to be a part of. Many extreme athletes don’t bother with the kind of protective gear that they should be wearing, in part because they worry that kneepads or elbow pads will decrease their cool factor. However, taking care of your body is as important for an extreme athlete as it is for any athlete, if not more so. Even if chucking bales might not seem as exciting with a helmet as it is without one, if you protect yourself you can always be sure that you will have the chance to take another crack at your favorite extreme challenge.

Leaps of faith: extreme sports with adventurous appeal

Article by Andrew Regan

Extreme sports have traditionally been the preserve of only the maddest, baddest and most dangerous to know, and of course rebellious teenagers keen to worry their mums. However, as with any trend worth its salt, the history and variety of ‘extreme’ activities – also known as action, adventure or dangerous sports – are more interesting than many people realise, and there are well-established organisations which can help make delving into their adrenaline-pumping world almost as safe as any other hobby. The phrase ‘extreme sports’ only came into use in the 1990s, probably thanks to the first television coverage of organised events like the X Games. Many enthusiasts actually dislike the term, arguing that most typical activities such as bungee jumping, hang gliding and ice climbing are not ‘sports’ in the sense of competing against others to win something, and the ‘extreme’ tag just smacks of mid-90s advertising hype. Whatever you prefer to call it, extreme sports is a loose and ill-defined category which can include fairly mainstream pastimes like inline skating, BMX biking and snowboarding, (activities which can all involve elaborate spins, stunts and tricks) as well as more ‘out-there’ pursuits such as BASE jumping, freediving, zorbing, swooping, kite landboarding, volcano gliding, shark diving, octopus wrestling, nude parasailing, mafioso cuckolding (alright, that one’s not real). Just as some of these fall out of fashion – for instance, octopus wrestling is now considered cruel – new sports and clubs are growing up all the time, although several are tongue-in-cheek parodies such as extreme wheelbarrow and the celebrated extreme ironing. Skateboarding and snowboarding, or ‘snurfing’ as it was originally called, have been popular since their inception in the 1950s and 60s, while kite surfing can trace its origins back to thirteenth-century China when kites were used, just like sails on boats, to harness the power of the wind and allow streamlined, one-man canoes to go much faster for practical reasons, not just fun! With so much choice and interest in these previously niche activities, it’s unsurprising that an industry is springing up around extreme sports instruction and adventure holidays, where novices can learn the basics of a sport and then let loose their adventurous spirits in a supervised environment. These experiences could be the ideal gift for the ‘person who has everything’; don’t you know someone who’d rather spend their honeymoon in a cage in the Indian Ocean baiting great white sharks, than admiring their new toaster? Don’t we all?! How about bouncing down a hill in a three-metre, transparent PVC ball, with or without the optional water, and other people, inside it? It’s called zorbing, and it’s seriously taking off as the latest way to spend a fun weekend, from New Zealand to Bournemouth. Bear in mind that some activities should not be attempted by absolute beginners; the BASE jumping academy will only admit ‘students’ who have completed 200 skydives, and swooping, or ‘extreme skydiving’, is similar. As long as you’re clued up about such regulations, got any necessary equipment, and perhaps made sure your life insurance is up to date, though, why not explore a new activity today – the sky really is the limit!

Which Extreme Sport Is The Best For You

Article by Sandra de Charo

People around you are going to work or school everyday, making money, having fun in the evenings, going to movies, playing board games in Saturday… They seem happy to live like that. But you need something more exciting, don’t you? You need something that will make you feel deeply and incredibly alive. You need an extreme sport!

Don’t be afraid of the word “extreme”. Most of the sports I am going to introduce you aren’t much more dangerous than driving a car in the city. It’s just our fear that makes the extreme sports look scary – they aren’t. But the emotions and fun that you can experience when practicing an extreme sport can’t be compared to anything else!

Let’s pick the right sport for you:

Mountain biking. Do you like to ride a bicycle? Do you love mountains? Just one “yes” is enough to consider mountain biking as an option. Mountain biking involves riding a bike on slopes, long rough roads and other rough terrain, off roading and so on. It’s a sport which will train your stamina and braveness especially if you enjoy descending on mountain paths. If you think mountain biking might be for you, try riding outside of the big city to feel what is it like before buying expensive equipment. You will need a very good mountain bike, a helmet and body armour.

Snowboarding. If you like the snow and the winter, this is the sport for you. Snowboarding became very popular because it’s easier than skiing and many would say it’s far more exciting. Snowboarding will train your fast reactions, co-ordination, the strength of your feet and overall body condition.

If you want to start snowboarding, you need of course a good board, warm clothes, preferably special snowboarding equipment, glasses and helmet.

Make sure that there are mountains and snow near you. Snowboarding isn’t the best idea if you live in Hawaii:)

Scuba Diving. Are you an explorer? Do you want something exciting but don’t like high speeds or flying? Scuba diving is a great extreme sport that is at the same time calm and contemplative. Scuba diving involves diving in waters, underwater caves, reefs, old ships and so on. Be careful: although it doesn’t sound as dangerous as the other extreme sports, scuba diving also hides a lot of risks – decompression sickness, injures due to underwater stones, sea life dangers and so on.The equipment for scuba diving may be more expensive than the equipment to many other sports and its excellent condition is vital for reducing the risks. If you consider becoming a scuba diver, you need to make sure there is a sea near you of course.

Paragliding. Ever dreamed to fly? I know owning an airplane or even taking a ride is expensive, but paragliding isn’t that much. And believe me, it can be far more exciting because the paraglider lets you feel just like a bird soaring in the sky. The speed of flying lets you watch wonderful sights and feel the air around you without losing your breath (except from excitement). The best way to start paragliding is to join a paragliding club near you for few test flies. Such clubs are usually available in cities near mountains.

The paragliding equipment isn’t cheap, but it can serve you for years without much maintenance. You need a paraglider, harness, a helmet and good clothes.

Skydiving. If you like the idea of paragliding but want something even more dynamic, think about skydiving. It usually involves a parachute jump from an airplane and various duration of free fall (that means really high speed!). There are many types of skydiving, some of them are really extreme like the wingsuit base jumping for example. There are no specific requirements about the terrain – airplane skydiving can be practiced almost everywhere on the Earth. If you are more interested in the various kinds of base jumping, you’ll need to find a very high rock, tower or bridge near you.

The expensive equipment in skydiving can be rent at the parachuting clubs so you can try few jumps without huge investments at the beginning.

You may also want to check the prices of the used sky diving gear or consider indoor skydiving as a less risky and cheaper option.
